Amy Wallace has made plenty of mistakes in her young life, but she didn’t see this one coming. Chris Seger is a marine serving in Afghanistan. His life is forever altered by a single, fateful step. A mother of another Afghan war vet suffers a devastating loss, which changes the course of Finley’s life for good. Finley is a mostly golden retriever, who suddenly finds himself alone and confused in a dog shelter. Could this prison actually become the place where Finley finally finds freedom? Rescuing Finley tells the story of how one rescue dog powerfully impacts three tragic lives and puts all of them on a road toward redemption and healing.

Dan Walsh is known for page-turning, character driven novels. Fans of Dan’s other novels, as well as dog-lovers everywhere will especially enjoy Rescuing Finley.

Coming in 2016 Book 2 – Saving Parker and Book 3 – Finding Riley

Rescuing Finley A Forever Home Novel Book 1 edition by Dan Walsh Literature Fiction eBooks

I've read a few books by Dan Walsh--enough to know he's definitely a gifted writer--but this has to be my favorite so far. If you buy this one (and I hope you will), buy a box of kleenex too. Guys, you might need to get a box as well. You know how those pesky allergies make your eyes leak.

Okay, there's this girl, Amy, who knows better, but she gets hooked on drugs and needs the money, so she becomes a thief. She has stolen from friends and family until they no longer want anything to do with her. She goes with two other girls to shoplift an expensive piece of jewelry from a department store. Gets caught. Gets sentenced to prison for a few years.

She's frightened there. She's young, and she's not all that big. Lots of women there are hardened criminals and Amy doesn't win any popularity contests with them. Most nights, when she sleeps at all, nightmares haunt her. One letter from her little brother's new wife steers her to Christianity, a piece of light within the dark walls. She knows she earned this sentence, but she earnestly prays she will survive until she's served her sentence.

There's also this wounded warrior, Chris, one leg missing thanks to a plastic IED on a road in Afghanistan that their old metal detectors didn't find. Memories of that explosion give Chris nightmares too. He's learned to walk with his prosthetic leg, but he hasn't mastered dealing with the nightmares--sometimes occurring while he's wide awake.

And finally there's Finley, a rejected mostly-golden retriever. His master is killed in Afganistan, his master's mother doesn't want him, and he's in a humane society shelter, severely depressed, losing weight and not responsive.

A program that matches inmates and rescued dogs for training specifically for returning vets suffering from PTSD may be a life-saver for all three. Amy has been selected to be one of the trainers, even though she's never even owned a dog before. Finley is one of the dogs chosen to be in the program. And Chris--well, he's inspired by a buddy to try getting one of these dogs.

On second thought, get two boxes of kleenexes. You might need them.

Rescuing Finley A Forever Home Novel Book 1 edition by Dan Walsh Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

I really would give this 3.5 stars. I can't say this is my usual genre. Its light reading with some tender and poignant moments. Even though this wasn't the mystery fast paced action or thriller that I usually read, it certainly kept my interest. Loved Finley.
Dan Walsh stories never disappoint and this was no exception. The tale of Finley brings to light the severe struggle with PTSD that our soldiers struggle with daily. My son-in-law served in Iraq and he has a Golden Retriever named Sarge (pictured) that reminds me so much of Finley except that his skills are completely intuitive. He hasn't had special training yet he helps my SIL cope with his struggles. It is so amazing to watch.
Dan Walsh's style is straightforward and rather simplistic narration. Each character and situation got its own chapter, and as the story developed, the reader anticipated seeing how the stories would finally weave together. Because of the way it was presented so superficially and separately, I found that I was not bonding with any of the characters, but kept reading just to see how Dan Walsh would knit the separate threads together. The charm of this story is two-fold. First, it presents a very real situation--the trauma of countless forgotten war vets in the States dealing with PTSD and how drugs rarely enable them to overcome the trauma. The second is the program initiated by Humane Societies and prisons to rigorously train dogs to be the companions that these vets need to break through their nightmares and restore relationship to their lives. Part of the style emphasized the simplistic outlook that animal behaviorists believe dogs to have, an outlook that helps humans adjust after situations like war and prison have separated them from other people and broken their trust. The healing all the way around made this a charming and moving story. By the end, the reader is invested in the characters and is cheering them on.
One of the best stories I've ever read. I happen to love animals, especially dogs. And even though the story was fictional, I know that there are a lot of organizations in our great country that are dedicated to training therapy and service dogs to assist individuals in need, especially men and women who served in the military and suffer with PTSD. I have great admiration and respect for those that dedicate their time and knowledge in training the dogs, great respect for the dogs themselves, and the utmost respect for our military men and women who have suffered both emotionally and physically from serving our country.

The story was extremely well written, and it was totally refreshing that the writer, Dan Walsh, didn't feel a need to throw in a bunch of sexual content to make the story interesting and compelling. I look forward to reading more of Dan Walsh's work.
This story is wonderful!!! It offers insight into the emotional thoughts and experiences of all the main characters including Finley that really contribute a great deal to building the plot line throughout this story. It's definitely a character-driven storyline rather than an event driven experience. These characters are all very well fleshed out and realistic even in their weaknesses and their pain. The story also presents a common thought of many veterans and civilians regarding the war in Iraq and Afghanistan that plays an integral part in some of the issues our veterans deal with after returning home, at least based upon my personal experience with friends and family members who served. It's not a political statement so much as a contributing factor these veterans deal with in their struggle to return to their new "normal". This is a really heartwarming story about a real program and people that make such a tremendous difference in the lives of not just veterans but also shelter dogs and the inmates who train them to become service animals...well worth your time to read!
